Check eligibility before comparing
Australia prohibits specified engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs. Safe Work Australia’s definition includes a crystalline silica threshold of at least 1% and other criteria. Read the official definition and exclusions. Request documents for the exact product and confirm requirements with the relevant regulator and project professionals before ordering.
Acrylic solid surface
Consider solid surface when inconspicuous joints, integrated sink designs and refinishing matter. It can scratch and suffer heat damage: use cutting boards and trivets. Confirm the grade, colour, adhesive, support and proposed finish. “100% acrylic” describes the resin system, not a sheet made without mineral filler.
Porcelain, sintered surfaces and natural stone
Compare the specific product’s fabrication method, edge details, support, joints and repair options. Natural stone varies by type and finish; sealing needs should be confirmed for the selected stone. Porcelain or sintered surfaces also need careful handling and detailing. Follow care guidance for hot cookware on any chosen surface.
Laminate, timber and stainless steel
Laminate offers many decorative options but damage to the surface or substrate can limit repairs. Timber requires a suitable finish and care for moisture and wear. Stainless steel has a distinctive appearance and may show marks. Evaluate each option against the actual kitchen workflow rather than assuming a universal cost or lifespan.
Compare installed quotations
Include material, waste, fabrication, edge profiles, sinks, delivery, installation and removal of the old top. Approve physical samples and inspect a proposed joint. Ask who handles local repair and warranty claims.
